High Maintenence: Elijah
By now, it’s no surprise what today is: 420 the “Smoker’s Holiday” / “Ganja Day”. Hell, some of you are probably high right now if you’re celebrating (or just doing what you normally do). In time for the special day, URLe-Adopters is launching a new series of smoker-friendly posts for those of who like to put their high to good use & “nerd out” sometimes when in that gloriously elevated state-of-mind. As advocates for marijuana legalization, its use as a medicine & an all-purpose enhancer we will also will be keeping our readers up-to-date on some of the latest news in drug policy & marijuana legislation over the world.
Our first post is in all about probably the only activity that can go toe-to-toe with eating in popularity amongst people who get high: watching shit on the internet. From Netflix to YouTube and anything in-between, there are plenty of things to watch online but let every other list online tell you, there’s clearly a limit or they just keep thinking of same things- Planet Earth, Fear & Loathing In Las Vegas, Dazed & Confused and so on. Though all of them are awesome and undisputed classics for the most part, we wanted to give some new suggestions.
Some of these are obvious picks that seem to never get mentioned while others are a few gems simply floating around the internet. Not everything will necessarily be about cannabis and many probably win’t even have reefer in it but there will be plenty that will. We only provide the info & options, the choice is all yours- like the wonderful customer service of a medical marijuana dispensary. Anyway, here’s the list:
1.) PBS FRONTLINE: The Pot Republic:
PBS still tops polls as America’s most-trusted news source & Frontline is their flagship news show. In “The Pot Republic” they cover growing marijuana industry from several different angles: growing, manicuring, processing, law enforcement, entrepreneurs & medical marijuana patients. Pretty interesting & informative with cool scenes with cannabis plants grown in full sunlight that appear to be upwards of 6 or 7 feet high. They also have a pretty cool infographic of marijuana prices throughout America (via PriceOfWeed.com) in their resource well.
2.) The Layover: Amsterdam:
One of the coolest & most badass chefs on the planet, Anthony Bourdain is the king of making hipsters hungry. Even if you’re not “hip” enough to get some of the jokes & wit, you’ll still fall in love with the food weed selections he comes across in this episode. Amsterdam is Amsterdam & Bourdain’s not rookie when it comes to drugs so you don’t have to question how awesome this episode is. If you’re looking for better episodes to pacify your inner-foodie try these episodes: New Orleans, San Francisco, Montreal, & the cameo-packed New York edition.
3.) National Geographic: Marijuana Gold Rush:
National Geographic digs deeper into the topic of the entrepreneurial boom in the marijuana industry. Most of the filming took place in California, home to 1-in-8 Americans & the largest medical marijuana industry in America but they also head to New York City to see how Wall Street’s getting involved in the mix of it all.
6.) High Maintanence: “Olivia”
High Maintanence is a web-series about weed delivery guy, some of the customers he sells to & just life as a cannabis smoker in New York City. The entire series is pretty damn good & it’s higly suggested you check them all out but a personal favorite is the “Olivia” episode. Olivia’s pretty much a bitch and she & her friend are pretty rude to the weed man- they even steal some extra bud from him on the low. It ends so perfectly though that it all comes full-circle in less than 10 minutes & egos are crushed. New episodes dropped today so don’t sleep, be an urle-adopter.
7.) Huff Post Live’s Segments On Marijuana
Huffington Post is one of the largest news sources & easily-recognized media companies in the world today & they’ve been pumping some new energy into journalism for years now. Huffington Post’s live, internet channel is one of the most innovative & hands-on approaches to journalism & news coverage out today and it only helps them that they have a young & diverse group journalists covering the most important news topics out there- whether mainstream media covers them or not, Huff Post Live will. As the public opinion has shifted towards a majority favorability of marijuana legalization, they’ve increased news coverage of the topic even more after Washington & Colorado voted to legalize cannabis for recreational use last November. Check out one of their recent segments below about new bills being introduced in D.C. to further advance efforts to ultimately legalize marijuana in America & more here.
8.) Strain Hunters: Malawi
Strain Hunters isthe shit. It would probably be on Travel Channel or Nat Geo if the suits were savvy enough to know about it. The title should explain the premise pretty well but this episode is special because they travel to the African nation of Malawi in search of one of the most potent & beautiful strains of cannabis on Earth: Malawi Gold. Hit up their YouTube channel while you’re at it because there are plenty of other selections worth the time.
The eight & final one. Toke up, grab some food & enjoy your evening off the trees. Jah bless.

The Boondocks Creator Aaron McGruder Tells Us About The Uncle Ruckus Movie
It’s always scary when Hollywood tries to bring your favorite comic and cartoon characters to life in live-action films. For every success story like Sin City, there are innumerable steaming piles of shit like Aeon Flux. So when I heard there were plans to pull Uncle Ruckus from the pages of The Boondocks and put him on the big screen in a live action R-rated comedy, I had a lot of questions. Uncle Ruckus isn’t just any ordinary fictional character, and The Boondocks isn’t your average comic strip and animated series. The Boondocks, now in the midst of producing its fourth season for Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim, is one of the few programs on television that uses scathing satire to make you laugh and think critically about racial issues, politics, and modern life in America. And Uncle Ruckus—the white-people worshipping one-eyed right-wing nut job whose name has superseded “Uncle Tom” as the preferred pejorative for black sellouts—is probably the show’s most compelling and painfully hilarious character. When I first heard about the proposition of The Uncle Ruckus Movie, the last thing I wanted was for Hollywood to swoop in and make a quick buck by cashing in on the laughs Ruckus’s racist barbs garner, without delivering the more thought-provoking messages on race relations that we get in The Boondocks comic and show.
Then I saw the teaser below, and all of my doubts were put to rest. In it, actor Gary Anthony, who voices Ruckus on the Adult Swim series, appears in full Ruckus regalia, equipped with a rotund belly and the signature snaggletooth. It looks perfect. And most importantly, Boondocks creator Aaron McGruder is spearheading the production, ensuring that it will be smart, confrontational, and funny, instead of a soulless cash grab.
To raise funds for the production of The Uncle Ruckus Movie, Aaron’s team has launched a Kickstarter. They’re only about halfway to their goal of $200,000, and there is only a week left to pledge. So hurry up and contribute, because if they don’t hit their target by March 1st, the project won’t be funded and we’ll never get to experience all of the new and awful ways in which a real life Ruckus can racially berate his fellow human beings.
I used this exciting news of The Uncle Ruckus Movie as an excuse to badger Aaron McGruder’s press people until they let me talk to him for a half-hour. We chatted over the phone about the new film, the origin of Ruckus, and a bunch of other things like black self-hatred, post-Obama race relations, and why Herman Cain is a real-life Uncle Ruckus.
VICE: How did you know you wanted to make a movie about Ruckus?
Aaron McGruder: It started with the fact that I’ve never had a real interest in doing anything live action with Huey and Riley, because they are impossible to cast. Even if we found two perfect kids, they would grow out of that perfect state pretty quickly. The animated series really made it impossible since their voices have been established in the minds of the fans. If you deviate from that, people are going to hate you.
